At i-tem, sustainability is central to how we source, operate and grow. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact, supporting responsible supply chains and contributing to a healthier food system. Our policies and actions are built around transparency, accountability and continuous improvement, supported by the standards we follow and the partnerships we build.
Our Environmental Commitment
We aim to deliver high quality products while safeguarding the environment. This means minimising waste, reducing emissions, conserving resources and ensuring compliance with all UK environmental laws and the SALSA Brokers, Storage & Distribution Standard.
We integrate environmental considerations into every business decision, across procurement, warehousing, transport, packaging and daily operations. Staff receive regular training so that sustainability is part of how we work every day.
Responsible Sourcing
We prioritise suppliers that meet high environmental and ethical standards.
This includes:
- Verified sustainability and due diligence checks for every supplier.
- Preference for UK based or demonstrably sustainable producers.
- Responsible raw materials that protect biodiversity and avoid harmful practices.
- Full compliance with wildlife, animal welfare and CITES legislation.
We only approve suppliers who demonstrate safe working conditions, fair labour practices and ethical trading. Sustainability and social responsibility go hand in hand.
Reducing Our Environmental Impact
We are actively reducing the environmental footprint of our operations by focusing on:
Energy efficiency
Efficient cold storage, reduced energy consumption and continuous monitoring of usage.
Waste reduction
Minimising waste through recycling, controlled waste disposal and the use of recyclable or compostable materials. Only licensed waste contractors manage our waste streams.
Low-impact logistics
Optimised delivery routes and responsible vehicle use to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Transport activities are monitored to support continuous improvement.
Packaging improvements
Reducing non-recyclable packaging and prioritising materials designed for reuse, recycling or composting.
Protecting Animal Welfare & Biodiversity
We uphold the Five Freedoms of animal welfare and require all animal-based suppliers to follow humane, legal and transparent practices. We also prohibit the trade of illegal wildlife products and comply fully with CITES regulations.
Climate Responsibility & ESG
We recognise that environmental and social risks are also business risks. This is why ESG principles are embedded into our strategy, investment decisions, partnerships and operational planning. Our Board reviews environmental performance and ESG progress throughout the year.
Our ESG approach focuses on:
- Emissions reduction
- Efficient resource use
- Supply chain transparency
- Diversity and inclusion
- Long term sustainable value creation
Continuous Improvement
Sustainability at i-tem is a long term commitment. We monitor environmental KPIs, review performance quarterly and update our policies as legislation and best practices evolve. We actively engage employees, suppliers and partners to innovate and find better ways to reduce impact.
Our Promise
We are building a business that respects the environment, supports responsible food systems and contributes positively to the communities around us. Sustainability is not an add-on for us. It is part of our purpose.
